New LTI Profile Option for LC Authority Records Containing References in Non-Latin Script

Dec. 11, 2008

As of December 9, 2008, the number of authority records with cross-references (4xx fields) in non-Latin scripts exceeds 500,000 -- approximately 1 in 14 name-related authority records distributed by the Library of Congress.

Several libraries have reported problems with the display of these fields in their local systems. In response, LTI has implemented a profile option to have the non-Latin fields removed from authority records in files provided to libraries.

Libraries choosing this option will receive the national-level authority record intact except for the deletion of these cross-references. The change will take place in both the Authority Express (AEX) and the Authority Update Processing (AUP) services.

Should the library wish in the future to restore these fields, a completely new file of authority records should be requested after reverting the profile. The standard charge of $500 will apply to the production of the replacement authority file.

Please contact Marsha Hunt if your library wants to stop receiving the non-Latin cross-references. Unless a profile change is requested, libraries will continue to receive the unmodified LC authority records.
