***** 2nd Quarter 2010 *****

1) LC has changed all LCSH uses of "Cookery" to "Cooking"

E.g., "$aCookery, American" is now "$aCooking, American", "$aCookery (Apples)" is now "$aCooking (Apples)", and "$aJewish cookery" is now "$aJewish cooking".

See the LC CDS announcement for details.

2) LC has established a new LCSH heading "$aCookbooks"

"This heading is used as a topical heading for works about collections of recipes." (This topic has previously been included under the old "$aCookery" heading)

3) LC has changed the heading "$aRecipes" to "$aFormulas, recipes, etc."

This heading is used only for "collections of, and works about, formulas and recipes for preparing non-food items such as household products, cosmetics, etc." It is NOT used for cooking recipes.

The vast majority of uses of "$aRecipes" that LTI processes actually refer to food recipes, thus we are not automatically converting "$aRecipes" to "$aFormulas, recipes, etc." On a case-by-case basis (based on other subfields in the heading), LTI converts "$aRecipes" to a "Cooking" or "Cookbook" heading whenever possible.

4) LC has revised the LCSH sub-division record to specify that "$xRelations|zForeign countries" should be "$xRelations" alone.

Similarly, "$xMilitary relations|zForeign countries" should be "$xMilitary relations" alone.

5) LC is revising a large number of Korean names to replace uses of aleph (MARC8 $AE) and ayn (MARC8 $B0) with the apostrophe character (MARC8 $27).

6) LC has revised a large number (100,000+) of geographic headings to add a note giving geographic coordinates. See the LC CDS announcement for details.

***** 1st Quarter 2010 *****

1) LC is continuing to change inverted headings into direct forms.

In particular, the heading "150 $aLiterature, Comparative" has been changed to "150 $aComparative literature" which has altered a large number of headings.

2) The floating form/genre subfield "$vFilm and video adaptations" has been split into "$vFilm adaptations" and "$vTelevision adaptations".

In general, LTI has converted the old form to "$vFilm adaptations" unless specific information in the heading indicates that "$vTelevision adaptations" is a better choice.

Similarly, the floating topical subfield "$xFilm and video adaptations" has been split into "$xFilm adaptations" and "$xTelevision adaptations".

3) In December LC announced its "Decision regarding the final disposition of LCSH headings for video records" which essentially stops use of "... videos" and instead uses "... films" for topical headings.

E.g. "150 $aAnimated videos" was merged into "150 $aAnimated films" and "150 $aSports videos" was merged into "150 $aSports films."

4) LC has stopped using topical subdivisions of the form "$xLegal status, laws, etc. ([type of law]). E.g. "$xLegal status, laws, etc. (Canon law)", "$xLegal status, laws, etc. (Greek law)", etc.

Instead, the entire heading is entered directly in a $a with a qualifier in parentheses. E.g. "$aWomen$xLegal status, laws, etc. (Canon law)" has been changed to "$aWomen (Canon law)".

***** 4th Quarter 2009 *****

1) LC is continuing to change inverted headings into direct forms.
In particular, many headings that include the names of religions have been redone. For example:
"150 $aHeresies, Islamic" has been changed to "150 $aIslamic heresies".

2) The LCSH heading "150 $aProblem families" has been changed to "150 $aDysfunctional families".

3) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control:

(a) The 2010 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs, effective 1 January 2010.

(b) The files of auxiliary MeSH authority records have been updated based on changes in the 2010 MeSH file. See "4th Quarter 2003, section 2(c)" below for details.

4) For libraries that subscribe to Sears subject headings authority control:
The 2009 revisions of the Sears authority records are now in use.

***** 3rd Quarter 2009 *****

1) The LCSH heading "150 $aAlien labor" has been changed to "150 $aForeign workers". In addition, headings of the type "150 $aAlien labor, [Nationality]" have been changed to "150 $aForeign workers, [Nationality]". E.g., "150 $aAlien labor, African" has been changed to "150 $aForeign workers, African".

2) The LCSH heading "150 $aPeasantry" has been changed to "150 $aPeasants". In addition, headings using the terms "Peasantry" have been similarly modified. E.g. "150 $aPeasantry in art" has been changed to "150 $aPeasants in art".

3) The widely used LCSH heading "150 $aWomen in politics" has been changed to "150 $aWomen$xPolitical activity".

4) The LCSH floating topical subdivision "$xPolitical activity" is now authorized for geographic subdivision. As a result, a large number of library headings have been changed to move $z after "$xPolitical activity". E.g. "150 $aFarmers$zUnited States$xPolitical activity" have been changed to "150 $aFarmers$xPolitical activity$zUnited States".

***** 2nd Quarter 2009 *****

1) The LCSH heading "150 $aFamily" has been changed to "150 $aFamilies". In addition, "family" has been changed to "families" in related headings. E.g., "150 $aChurch work with families" and "150 $aFamilies in art".

2) The LCSH heading "151 $aTranscaucasia" has been changed to "151 $aCaucasus, South" and the geographic sub-division form has been changed to "$zCaucasus, South".

In related headings, the parenthetical qualifier "(Transcaucasian)" has been changed to "(South Caucasian)". E.g., the heading "150 $aArt, Georgian (Transcaucasian)" has been changed to "150 $aArt, Georgian (South Caucasian)" and "150 $aGeorgians (Transcaucasians)" and been changed to "150 $aGeorgians (South Caucasians)"

3) LC has also "un-inverted" a number of additional LCSH headings. For example,
"150 $aMonasteries, Buddhist" has been changed to "150 $aBuddhist monasteries"
"150 $aTemples, Buddhist" has been changed to "150 $aBuddhist temples"
"150 $aPainting, Zen" has been changed to "150 $aZen painting"

4) LC has increased its "Distribution of Subject Authority Records for Validation Purposes" (See the CDS announcement). As of the end of June 2009, LC has distributed about 40,500 of these records.

LTI has implemented a profile option so that libraries can choose to not receive these validation records.

5) Some libraries will receive a larger than usual number of changed authority records due to three LC projects (which are now substantially complete):
a) Deletion of final periods from older authority records
b) Addition of notes with GPS information to geographical headings
c) Addition of non-Latin script cross-references in 4xx fields

***** 1st Quarter 2009 *****

1) In May 2008, the Library of Congress announced its plans to begin distributing name authority records with non-Latin script cross-references in 4xx fields. Answers to frequently asked questions about this project are found here on LC's website.

As of the end of March 2009, LC has distributed about 518,000 of these revised authority records. Your file(s) of updated authority records will probably include some of these records.

LTI has implemented a profile option to have non-Latin fields removed from authority records in files provided to libraries.

2) LC has changed all of the LCSH topical and form subdivisions for the U.S. census to omit the ordinal number of the census. For example, "$xCensus, 1st, 1790" has become "$xCensus, 1790", "$vCensus, 22nd, 2000" has become "$xCensus, 2000", etc. In addition, LC has moved toward the use of $v coding (instead of $x) when these subdivisions are the last subfield in the heading. Numerous bib records are affected because these subdivisions are also used after the names of U.S. states and U.S. ethnic groups.

3) LC has changed all of the LCSH headings for types of catalogs from inverted to uninverted forms. For example: "150 $aCatalogs, Union" has been changed to "150 $aUnion catalogs" and "150 $aCatalogs, School" has been changed to "150 $aSchool catalogs."

4) LC has also "un-inverted" a number of other LCSH headings. For example,
"150 $aBody, Human" has been changed to "150 $aHuman body"
"150 $aDesign, Industrial" has been changed to "150 $aIndustrial design"
"150 $aArchitecture, Buddhist" has been changed to "150 $aBuddhist architecture"
"150 $aMarine aquariums, Public" has been changed to "150 $aPublic marine aquariums"

5) The LCSH heading "150 $aElectric engineering" has been changed to "150 $aElectrical engineering". In addition, "150 $aElectric engineers" has been changed to "150 $aElectrical engineers".

6) LC continues its "Distribution of Subject Authority Records for Validation Purposes" (See the CDS announcement). As of the end of March 2009, LC has distributed about 1600 of these records.

LTI has implemented a profile option so that libraries can choose to not receive these validation records.

7) LC continues to create and distribute LCSH genre/form authority records (tagged 155), including a number for sound records, e.g. "155 $aTalking books." The records extracted for your library (if any) are in a file with the extension ".LCG".

Recently, LC announced projects to create and distribute additional catagories of genre/form authority records.

***** 4th Quarter 2008 *****

1) On May 15, the Library of Congress announced its plans to begin distributing name authority records with non-Latin script cross-references in 4xx fields. Answers to frequently asked questions about this project are found here on LC's website.

As of the end of December 2008, LC has distributed about 510,000 of these revised authority records. Your file(s) of updated authority records will probably include some of these records.

LTI has implemented a profile option to have non-Latin fields removed from authority records in files provided to libraries.

2) LC has changed all of the LCSH headings for types of insurance from inverted to uninverted forms. E.g. "650 $aInsurance, Life" has been changed to "650 $aLife insurance."

3) LC has changed all of the LCSH headings for types of bridges from inverted to uninverted forms. E.g. "650 $aBridges, Concrete" has been changed to "650 $aConcrete bridges."

4) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control:

(a) The 2009 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs, effective 1 January 2009.

(b) The files of auxiliary MeSH authority records have been updated based on changes in the 2009 MeSH file. See "4th Quarter 2003, section 2(c)" below for details.

***** 3rd Quarter 2008 *****

1) On May 15, the Library of Congress announced its plans to begin distributing name authority records with non-Latin script cross-references in 4xx fields. Answers to frequently asked questions about this project are found here on LC's website.

As of the end of September, LC has distributed about 266,000 of these revised authority records. Your file(s) of updated authority records will probably include some of these records.

2) The LCSH headings for various types of insurance have been changed from inverted to direct forms. E.g., "150 $aInsurance, Dental" has become "150 $aDental insurance", "150 $aInsurance, Flood" has become "150 $aFlood insurance", etc.

3) The LCSH chronological subdivision for "150 $aArchitecture" and related headings has been revised. From the LCSH weekly list 32 (August 6, 2008): "Architecture [and related headings]: These changes ... reflect a decision to treat the chronological subdivisions for architecture in a manner similar to the treatment of most topical subjects."

The subdivision $xHistory is now used before the subdivision for the time period. E.g., "150 $aArchitecture$zItaly$y20th century" became
"150 $aArchitecture$zItaly$xHistory$y20th century"

4) A number of the chronological subdivisions ($y) under "$aPortugal$xHistory" have been changed.
E.g., "$aPortugal$xHistory$yAlfonso II, 1211-1223" has been changed to "$aPortugal$xHistory$yAfonso II, 1211-1223"

5) In July, MARBI approved a proposal to make the 440 field obsolete and use instead the 490/8XX field combination (See LC's announcement here). As explained in LTI's News & Notes, AUP and AEX customers can change their profile to match this new usage.

If your library has selected this option, a larger than usual number of changed bib records will be returned to the library in this AUP run.

***** 2nd Quarter 2008 *****

1) LC has continued with the special projects discussed below under "1st Quarter 2008" which have produced many new and modified authority records.

2) LC has changed the subject heading "150 $aAdventure films" to "150 $aAction and adventure films". A LCSH genre/form authority record "155 $aAction and adventure films" was also added.

3) LC has changed the subject heading "150 $aTelevision serials" to "150 $aTelevision series". A LCSH genre/form authority record "155 $aTelevision series" was also added.

4) LC has changed the subject heading "150 $aOmbudsman" to "150 $aOmbudspersons".

***** 1st Quarter 2008 *****

1) LC has begun a cleanup project which "will remove unnecessary ending punctuation from 1XX headings in older authority records" (See the CDS announcement).

LTI made these changes to its copy of the LC auth recs about 10 years ago so few 1XX fields in LC auth recs distributed to LTI customers were changed. However, since the LC cleanup changed the 005 date in the records, libraries may see a larger number of records returned to the library and reported as "Revised Auth Recs - 1XX same" in the AUP ".LSA" report.

2) LC continues its "Distribution of Subject Authority Records for Validation Purposes" (See the CDS announcement), and has estimated that from "several hundred thousand to over a million" such records will be created. Thus, libraries may see a larger number of auth records returned to the library and reported as "New Auth Records" in the AUP ".LSA" report.

3) During the first quarter of 2008, LC did a project to use the Marc-8 musical sharp character (hex $C4) in place of using "#" (the pound sign) for the musical sharp. LTI has updated its $m float tables to always use the $C4 sharp character and to change "#" to the musical sharp character where needed.

4) During the first quarter of 2008, LC did a project to use the Marc-8 degree sign (hex $C0) wherever possible. It usually replaced the escape sequence for "superscript zero" (esc-p 0 esc-s). While this primarily changed geographic coordinates in the note fields of geographical headings, some 1XX fields were also affected -- e.g. #no 99025097, "1102 $a98[degree sign] (Musical group)".

5) In response to considerable discussion, LC has re-established the LCSH heading "Scottish literature" instead of converting the heading to "English literature|xScottish authors." Similar reversals were made for "Scottish poetry", etc.

6) LC has established "151 $aKosovo (Republic)" as a separate county from Serbia (the old form was "151 $aKosovo (Serbia)").

Headings for places located in Kosovo are now qualified by "(Kosovo)" rather than by "(Kosovo, Serbia)". E.g., "151 $aGlogovac (Kosovo, Serbia)" is now "151 $aGlogovac (Kosovo)". Similarly, subject $z subfields now use "$zKosovo (Republic)" instead of "$zSerbia." E.g., "$zSerbia$zGlogovac (Kosovo) is now "$zKosovo (Republic)$zGlogovac".

***** 4th Quarter 2007 *****

1) LTI is now using and distributing the LCSH genre/form authority records (tagged 155) created by the Library of Congress. The records extracted for your library (if any) are in a file with the extension ".LCG". For further information, see News & Notes on the LTI website.

2) LTI now offers options for 1) conversion of genre/form headings in 650 to 655 and 2) conversion of GSAFD genre/form headings to LCSH genre/form headings. For further information, see News & Notes on the LTI website.

3) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control:

(a) The 2008 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs, effective 2 January 2008.

(b) The files of auxiliary MeSH authority records have been updated based on changes in the 2008 MeSH file. See "4th Quarter 2003, section 2(c)" below for details.

***** 3rd Quarter 2007 *****

1) LC has begun to distribute LCSH genre/form authority records (tagged 155), providing a small number of records in the September 2007 weekly files. LTI is currently collecting and analyzing these records, preparing to incorporate the official records into existing processing in the near future. For further information and updates, see News & Notes on the LTI website.

2) As announced in the CDS bulletin of May 25 2007, LC has begun a project "to create subject authority records for every subject string appearing in bibliographic records to aid Library of Congress catalogers and external users in the validation of LCSH subject heading strings." A number of these records were produced and distributed in the 3rd quarter of 2007.

3) LC has changed the spelling of "Sulphur" to "Sulfur" in subject headings. This includes related nouns and adjectives ("Sulfurization," "Sulfuric," "Sulfonic," etc.) in both main headings ($a) and topical subdivisions ($x).

4) LC has changed "$aInsanity" to "$aInsanity (Law)" in record #sh 85066558. The auth record scope notes had already limited the heading to the legal concept and this change clarifies such.

5) LC has merged the old heading "$aVideo recordings for people with visual disabilities" into the existing heading "$aFilms for people with visual disabilities." This is a somewhat controversial change that appears to be related to the creation of LCSH Form/Genre authority records.

6) Similarly, LC has merged the old heading "$aVideo recordings for the hearing impaired" into the existing heading "$aFilms for the hearing impaired." This is a somewhat controversial change that appears to be related to the creation of LCSH Form/Genre authority records.

7) The file of changed bib records (".CHG") now includes records where one or more non-filing indicators have changed -- even if no authorized headings were changed.

The changes to non-filing indicators are listed in an optional report. For further information, see WWW.LIBRARYTECH.COM/NONFILING.html. To sign up for this report, contact Marsha Hunt at LTI (MHunt@LibraryTech.Com).

8) For libraries that subscribe to Sears subject headings authority control:
The 19th edition of the Sears authority records (released in 2007) allows the use of "Juvenile" subdivisions -- e.g. "$xJuvenile literature," "$xJuvenile fiction," etc. These subdivisions are now validated as legitimate floats in Sears headings instead of being altered or deleted.

***** 2nd Quarter 2007 *****

1) LC has split the heading "$aSelf-consciousness" into two headings:
"$aSelf-consciousness (Awareness)" and "$aSelf-consciousness (Sensitivity)".

Rather than automatically change all instances of "$aSelf-consciousness" to one of the new headings, most instances of "$aSelf-consciousness" will not be corrected and will appear on the unlinked headings list. If further subdivisions in a heading (e.g. $x or $v) indicate which of the new headings is correct, the change will be made as LTI editors encounter the form.

2) LC has split the heading "$aScouts and scouting" into four headings:
"$aScouts (Reconnaissance)", "$aScouting (Reconnaissance)", "$aScouts (Youth activity)", and "$aScouting (Youth activity)"

Rather than automatically change all instances of "$aScouts and scouting" to one of the new headings, most instances of "$aScouts and scouting" will not be corrected and will appear on the unlinked headings list. If further subdivisions in a heading (e.g. $x or $v) indicate which of the new headings is correct, the change will be made as LTI editors encounter the form.

3) LC has changed the heading "$aMensuration" to "$aMeasurement".

4) LC has changed the form sub-division "$vParaphrases, tales, etc." to "$vAdaptations".

5) LC has changed the topical sub-divisions "$xRankings" and "$xRatings" to "$xRatings and rankings".

6) LTI now provides a new optional report that lists the changes to non-filing indicators in records processed by AUP and AEX. For further information, see WWW.LIBRARYTECH.COM/NONFILING.html. To sign up for this report, contact Marsha Hunt at LTI (MHunt@LibraryTech.Com).

7) A new section has been added to the ".LSA" report of authority record changes. The "General to specific changes in personal name records" section lists revised authority records where the authorized form is tagged "100" (i.e., is a personal name) and the change is from a general form to a more specific form.

E.g., "1001 $aYoung, Anthony" to "1001 $aYoung, Anthony,$d1932-".

8) For libraries that subscribe to Sears subject headings authority control:
The 19th edition of the Sears authority records (released in 2007) was used for this AUP run and is now used for Authority Express runs.

9) For some time, Amy Turner at Duke University has operated an e-mail discussion group for AUP and AEX users. LTI regularly posts announcements about AEX and AUP to the forum.
To join the list, contact Amy Turner (amy.turner@duke.edu).

***** 1st Quarter 2007 *****

1) Use of "Yukon" in subject headings changed

(a) In early 2007, LC changed the "subject usage form" (in LCSH headings) from "151 $aYukon (Territory)" to "151 $aYukon".

(b) In geographical subdivisions, "$zYukon (Territory)" has been changed to "$zYukon" and the $z$z forms for places in Yukon have been changed as well. E.g., "$zYukon (Territory)$zWhitehorse" has become "$zYukon$zWhitehorse".

2) LC has changed the form subdivision "$vPrayer-books and devotions" to "Prayers and devotions"

(a) Similarly, the topical subdivision "$xPrayer-books and devotions" has been changed to "$xPrayers and devotions"

(b) In addition, this subdivision (both as $v and as $x) can no longer be subdivided by language. E.g. "$vPrayer-books and devotions$xEnglish" has been changed to "$vPrayers and devotions"

3) LC has been removing the topical subdivision "$xLaw and legislation" from headings where the preceding $a is itself a legal topic.

E.g., "$aBankruptcy$xLaw and legislation" has been changed to "$aBankruptcy", "$aCivil rights$xLaw and legislation" has become "$aCivil rights", etc.

***** 4th Quarter 2006 *****

1) In the last two quarters, LC has eliminated a number of special topical subdivisions used under the heading "$aRailroads" and has replaced them with phrase headings. For example:

"$aRailroads$xTrains" has been changed to "$aRailroad trains"
"$aRailroads$xCars" has been changed to "$aRailroad cars"

2) In early 2006, LC implemented a policy to permit "the addition of death dates to those headings with 'open' birth dates" and detailed a project to add death dates to 300 headings for prominent persons. (See LCRI 22.17)

LC has completed this initial project, However, LC and other NACO libraries are continuing to add death dates to additional headings.

3) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control:

(a) The 2007 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs, effective 2 January 2007.

(b) The files of auxiliary MeSH authority records have been updated based on changes in the 2007 MeSH file. See "4th Quarter 2003, section 2(c)" below for details.

***** 3rd Quarter 2006 *****

1) In July of 2006 the union between Serbia and Montenegro was ended and they are now two separate countries. Thus, LC has split the heading "$aSerbia and Montenegro" into "$aSerbia" and "$aMontenegro" and the old forms "$aSerbia (Serbia and Montenegro)" and "$aMontenegro (Serbia and Montenegro)" are no longer used. LTI has updated name and subject usage as needed.

2) Similarly, most subject geographical sub-division forms have been changed to "$zSerbia" or "Montenegro", especially where a $z follows. E.g. "$zSerbia and Montenegro$zBelgrade (Serbia)" has been changed to "$zSerbia$zBelgrade".

3) LC now allows the topical subdivision "$xMortality" to be geographically subdivided. Numerous headings which had a $z before "$xMortality" have been modified to move the $z after "$xMortality" which is the LC-preferred order. E.g., "$aCancer$zKansas$xMortality" and been changed to "$aCancer$xMortality$zKansas".

4) LC now allows the topical subdivision "$xFamily relationships" to be geographically subdivided. Numerous headings which had a $z before "$xFamily relationships" have been modified to move the $z after "$xFamily relationships" which is the LC-preferred order. E.g., "$aCaregivers$zKansas$xFamily relationships" and been changed to "$aCaregivers$xFamily relationships$zKansas".

5) LTI has made a number of enhancements to its web site. Key word searching of the site is available using the "Search This Site" button at the lower left of the menu bar. Check it out at WWW.LIBRARYTECH.COM or WWW.AUTHORITYCONTROL.COM

6) AUP users can now go directly to the AUP Login page of the LTI web site by using the URL WWW.LTIAUP.COM. AEX (Authority Express) users can do the same at WWW.LTIAEX.COM.

***** 2nd Quarter 2006 *****

1) On June 1, 2006, LC implemented a new policy of NOT doing authority control of series headings. Rather, in LC cataloging, all series will be recorded in "490 0" (series, not traced) fields and no new series authority records will be created by LC.

For LTI's full response to this announcement see LTI Recommendations Regarding LC's Series Decision

Libraries that have recently chosen the LTI option to include "490 0" fields in authority control will have many more series heading changes in this AUP run.

2) Because of the above, the ".LSB" report contains a new section:
"Series, $v subfield code added only."

This section includes instances where the only change in the heading is the addition of a $v code (subfield v coding) into the heading. This is a common change when 490-0 fields are brought under authority control.

Thus, the ".LSB" list now contains up to 17 subsections. See the document The AUP LSB & LSA Reports for further information.

3) LC has changed the heading "Vietnamese Conflict, 1961-1975" to "Vietnam War, 1961-1975."

4) In early February, LC implemented a policy to permit "the addition of death dates to those headings with 'open' birth dates" and detailed a project to add death dates to 300 headings for prominent persons. (See LCRI 22.17)

LC has completed this initial project, However, LC and other NACO libraries are continuing to add death dates to additional headings

5) LC has revised a large number of the authority records for $x and $v subdivisions ("18X" records) and has added some new 18X records.

See "1st Quarter 2003, section 6" below for details on downloading the 18X records.

***** 1st Quarter 2006 *****

1) Unicode in bib records option

LTI has completed development and testing of software to allow the transfer of bib records in the Unicode (UTF-8) character set rather than MARC-8.

Because LTI authority control processing is based on Library of Congress authority records, authorized headings in controlled fields are normally returned in the MARC-8 character set, as found in LC authority records. To avoid re-importing a record with a mixed character set (MARC-8 in headings/Unicode in description), we have advised that exported bib records (for either AUP or AEX) should be converted to MARC-8 before they are sent to LTI.

To accommodate transfer of records in Unicode, LTI now has the capability to receive records in Unicode, convert the controlled headings to MARC-8 for matching against the LC authority record, and, when authorization has been completed, convert the MARC-8 headings back to Unicode. This allows matching to LC authority records and still preserves the integrity of Unicode records, as there will be a single character set used in the authorized bib record.

This option for conversion of controlled headings to Unicode requires a profile change, as the default remains for LTI to return controlled headings in MARC-8. Any library which wishes to change its profile should contact (MHunt@LibraryTech.Com) with that request.

Libraries using Authority Update Processing will need to set up a new base bibliographic file, exported in Unicode, before their next AUP run. Regular charges to set up the base file will apply.

2) In early February, LC implemented a policy to permit "the addition of death dates to those headings with 'open' birth dates (the kinds of headings perceived by catalog users as wrong, misleading, or outdated)."

LC's plan for implementing this revised policy, as well as details about a project to add death dates to 300 headings for prominent persons, is available at LCRI 22.17

Many of these additions have already been made to the LC authority records resulting in a large number of changes in this AUP run.

3) Because of the above, the ".LSB" report contains two new sections for instances where the only change in the heading is the addition of a death date:
"Name/title, death date added only" and
"Subject, name death date added only".

Thus, the ".LSB" list now contains up to 16 subsections. See the document The AUP LSB & LSA Reports for further information.

4) Use of "Yemen" in name headings changed

In December 2005, LC has changed the heading "$aYemen" to "$aYemen (Republic) in the name authority file (record n 81053408). Since then, LC has been revising the "110 1 $aYemen$b..." forms to "110 1 $aYemen (Republic)$b..." but many still remain to be done.

5) Use of "Yemen" in subject headings changed

(a) In late March 2006, LC changed the LCSH headings from "151 $aYemen" to "151 $aYemen (Republic) when the heading refers to the entire geographical area.

(b) In addition, LC added two new LCSH headings for major parts of Yemen.

"Yemen, North" is the subject-usage form for the name headings "Yemen (Arab Republic)" and "Yemen (Sana)".

"Yemen, South" is the subject-usage form for the name headings "Yemen (People's Democratic Republic", "Southern Yemen," "Aden (Protectorate), and several other forms.

(c) In geographical subdivisions, "$zYemen" has changed to "$zYemen (Republic)" and most $z$z forms for places in Yemen have been changed as well. E.g., "$zYemen$zAden" has become "$zYemen (Republic)$zAden"

6) Over the past few months, LC has changed many LCSH authority records from $a[topic]$x[topical subdivision] to $a[topic]$v[form subdivision]. For example:

$aPrinting$xDictionaries to $aPrinting$vDictionaries
$aSoldiers$xHymns to $aSoldiers$vHymns
$aSpiders$xFolklore to $aSpiders$vFolklore
$aAeronautics$xExhibitions to $aAeronautics$vExhibitions

***** 4th Quarter 2005 *****

1) LC has added the date of death to the heading "$aJohn Paul$bII,$cPope,$d1920-2005" in authority record n 78078345.

2) LC has changed the heading "$aYemen" to "$aYemen (Republic) in the name authority file (record n 81053408).

However, they have not yet changed the various records starting with "$aYemen" in the subject authority file. LC has told LTI that these changes will occur in February.

3) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control:

(a) The 2006 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs, effective 2 January 2006.

(b) The files of auxiliary MeSH authority records have been updated based on changes in the 2006 MeSH file. See "4th Quarter 2003, section 2(c)" below for details.

4) For any library that is exporting records from its local system to send to LTI (e.g.: a new AUP "base" file or an AEX input file):

If your local system gives you the option of exporting records in either the UNICODE character set or the MARC-8 character set, choose the MARC-8 option.

LC authority records use the MARC-8 character set and, if you send records in UNICODE, LTI must convert the controlled headings to MARC-8 in order to process them against the LC authority file. When these records are returned to you, they will contain a mixture of fields encoded in MARC-8 (the controlled fields) and UNICODE (all other fields) which may confuse your local system when you reload the records.

***** 3rd Quarter 2005 *****

1) LC has changed the subject heading "$aFamily life" to "$aFamily."

This has changed a large number of records for most libraries.

2) LC has changed the subject heading "Great Lakes" to "Great Lakes (North America)." This change has been made both in the $a and the $z forms of this heading.

In addition "Great Lakes Region" became "Great Lakes Region (North America)" and "Great Lakes Watershed" became "Great Lakes Watershed (North America)."

3) LC has changed the subject heading "Asia, Southeastern" to "Southeast Asia." This change has been made both in the $a and the $z forms of this heading.

In addition, the parenthetical qualifier "(Southeastern Asia)" was changed to "(Southeast Asia)" in a number of records. E.g., "$aMaa language (Southeastern Asia)" is now "$aMaa language (Southeast Asia)."

4) Changes due to the ongoing projects involving the names of Indian tribes (see "2nd Quarter 2005, section 3") and parks (see "1st Quarter 2005, section 2") have continued and are included in this AUP run.

5) As of 1 Jan 2006, the per-record fee for extra records in a new AUP base file will be the same as the per-record fee for Authority Express (currently 10 cents per record).

***** 2nd Quarter 2005 *****

1) A new ".ULH" output file is now returned to the library.

The "XXXXX-AUP052.ULH" [where XXXXX is your library id] file lists the headings in which the $a is still unlinked after the AUP processing. (This file is not included with the old AUP "level 1" service.)

2) On 9 April 2005 LC changed authority record #no 96020352:
old: "130 0 $aEarly American imprints.$n1st series"
new: "130 0 $aEarly American imprints.$nFirst series"

This revised 130 field now parallels the 130 field in #no2005016366:
"130 0 $aEarly American imprints.$nSecond series"

This is the reverse of the change that we hoped that LC would make (see "1st Quarter 2005, section 2") and has resulted in a large number of series heading changes.

3) Changes in the tagging of names of Indian tribes:

In June, LC announced that "the appropriate MARC 21 field for names of U.S. government recognized tribes as legal entities in name authority records will henceforth be the 151 (Geographic name) field instead of the previously used 110 (Corporate name) field." (LC Cataloging Newsline, June 2005).

Many of the revised authority records have now been issued by LC and the changes are included in this AUP run.

4) Changes in "Tobacco" and "Narcotics" headings:

LC has revised a number of heavily-used headings for these topics. E.g., "Narcotic habit" is now "Drug addition", "Narcotics and crime" is now "Drug abuse and crime", "Heroin habit" is now "Heroin abuse", etc.

Also in this AUP run, "Cigarette habit" has been changed to "Smoking." LC has revised the old authority record of "150 $aCigarette habit" (sh 85723693) to "150 $aSmoking" and has added a new authority record for "150 $aNicotine addiction" (sh2005002478).

***** 1st Quarter 2005 *****

1) LC has begun "implementation of [a] new practice for government-designated parks, forests, etc." which distinguishes between the "corporate administrative entity" (name authority) and the "physical, geographic entity" (subject authority).

The names of parks included in the name authority file are now tagged "110" and are qualified with "(Agency)" at the end of the heading. E.g., "110 2 $aJoshua Tree National Park (Agency)". Parks included in the subject authority file continue to be tagged "151" and are qualified with a geographic term. E.g., "151 $aJoshua Tree National Park (Calif.)". See
www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/parks2.html for details.

2) In early March LC distributed authority record # no2005016366 for part two of the "Early American imprints" series. The authorized heading is: "130 0 $aEarly American imprints.$nSecond series".

The authorized heading for the first part of the series (#no 96020352, created in 1996) is: "130 0 $aEarly American imprints.$n1st series", not "$nFirst series". LTI has always used "$n2nd series" as the authorized heading for the second part of the series. Titles in the series vary, using both "2nd series" and "Second series" in the series name.

We have requested that LC review this new record and, if at all possible, change it to use "$n2nd series" so that it parallels the form established in the "$n1st series" record. Until we hear back from LC, we will continue to authorize the heading as "$n2nd series" -- as we have done in this AUP run. If LC replies that they will keep "$nSecond series" we will make the change in the next AUP run.

3) Enhanced removal of leading articles from titles.

We have enhanced our software's ability to accurately remove leading articles from "130" uniform title heading and title-entry series headings when there is no authority record for the heading itself.

For example, you will see (in the ".LSB" list) a number of entries that are headed "Series : no link" followed by "old:" and "new:" entries showing the removal of a leading article. For example:

Series : no link
old: Y300-$aA Speechmark practical sourcebook
new: Y300-$aSpeechmark practical sourcebook

4) LTI will offer monthly AUP service.

Effective 1 May 2005, LTI will introduce a new monthly Authority Update Processing frequency. The new monthly option is available only to libraries that also receive a file of changed bibliographic records -- i.e., it is not available to libraries still using the old AUP Level I service (Except for existing customers, the Level I service was discontinued in 2004).

The monthly AUP frequency delivers the same features, output files, and reports as provided with the quarterly, semi-annual, and annual frequencies. Authority Express (AEX) files received after the previous AUP run will be added to the library's AUP file before each monthly run. Normally, the monthly run will occur on the first business day of each month, with processing results available to the library by the fifth day of the month. Libraries will be notified by e-mail when their files are ready for FTP pick up, with invoices prepared after each run.

Libraries that wish to switch to the monthly service should send an email, at least two weeks prior to the next scheduled monthly run, to: AUP@LibraryTech.com.

AUP monthly charges are based on the size of the library's database:
*up to 199,999 records..: $ 400 per run (total annual cost - $ 4,800)
*200,000-499,999 records: $ 600 per run (total annual cost - $ 7,200)
*500,000-999,999 records: $ 800 per run (total annual cost - $ 9,600)
*1,000,000 plus records.: $1000 per run (total annual cost - $12,000)

***** 4th Quarter 2004 *****

1) Based on revised LC authority records and recent LC practice, some additional $x subdivisions are now automatically converted to $v when they occur as the last subfield in a subject heading.

The most frequent cases are "Sources," "Texts," "Adaptations," and "Controversial literature."

2) The files of auxiliary LCSH authority records have been updated. See "1st Quarter 2003, section 6" below for details.

3) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control:

(a) The 2005 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs, effective 23 December 2004.

(b) The form subdivision "$vCase Report" has been changed to "$vCase Reports" as per the 2004 change by NLM.

(c) A software problem which sometimes prevented the correction of "$vU.S." and "$xU.S." to "$zUnited States" has been fixed.

(d) The files of auxiliary MeSH authority records have been updated based on changes in the 2005 MeSH file. See "4th Quarter 2003, section 2(c)" below for details.

***** 3rd Quarter 2004 *****

1) In the "LC Subject Headings Weekly List 36 (September 8, 2004)" LC announced that the following floating subdivisions, used under names of individuals, are obsolete:

$xContributions in [specific field or discipline]
$xViews on [specific topic]

LC will no longer assign such subdivisions and "existing bibliographic records in which these subdivisions have been used will be updated on a gradual basis by CPSO."

For the time being, pending further review, LTI will allow such subdivisions to exist in subject headings (i.e., we will not delete them).

2) LTI has continued to refine and enhance a number of the changes announced in previous quarters (see below).

3) Effective September 1, 2004, LTI is no longer offering "Level I" AUP to new customers -- existing level I customers can continue to subscribe at that level of service and pricing.

***** 2nd Quarter 2004 *****

1) LC has replaced "Aged" with "Older people" when referring to people "between middle and advanced age." Similarly, the adjectival use of "Aged" has been changed to "Older" (e.g. "Aged authors" became "Older authors") and the use of "aged" in floating subdivisions has also been changed.

This AUP run includes all of these changes.

2) In February 2004 LC made significant changes to section 1917.5 of the "Subject Catalog Manual: Subject Headings" manual. That section covers proper form of LCSH "Music Form/Genre Headings: Medium of Performance" headings.

Over the past few months LTI has substantially revised and extended our processing code and tables to allow better detection and correction of errors in such headings. This AUP run includes changes due to these enhancements.

***** 1st Quarter 2004 *****

1) LC has changed the heading "$aReconstruction" to "$aReconstruction (U.S. history, 1865-1877)." Although LC has always specified that the heading "$aReconstruction" was for that time period in U.S. history, many libraries used it to refer to the process of "Reconstruction" in various times and places.

To avoid many bad changes of "$aReconstruction" to "$aReconstruction (U.S. history, 1865-1877), LTI has blocked the "450 $aReconstruction" cross reference in LC auth record sh 85-111862.

Instead, LTI is making explicit cross references where subdivisions of headings indicate that it is highly probable that heading should be the U.S. history form. For example, "$aReconstruction$zVirginia" is changed to "$aReconstruction (U.S. history, 1865-1877)$zVirginia."

2) LC has modified its use of "Clothing" and "Costume" (see LC auth recs sh 85-027160 and sh 85-033238) and has changed a number of records accordingly. E.g., "$aSashes (Costume)" is now "$aSashes (Clothing) and the floating subdivision "$xCostume" has been changed to "$xClothing."

3) In March 2004, LC announced that "Aged" will be replaced with "Older people." Similarly, the adjectival use of "Aged" will be changed to "Older" (e.g. "Aged authors" will become "Older authors") and the use of "aged" in floating subdivisions will likewise be changed.

As of March 31, authority records with these changes had not been distributed and these changes are NOT included in this AUP run. They will be in the 2nd Quarter 2004 run.

4) For libraries that subscribe to Sears subject headings authority control:

(a) The 18th edition of the Sears authority records (released in early 2004) were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs.

(b) In the 18th edition of Sears, the heading "Native Americans" has replaced "Indians" and "Indians of North America."

***** 4th Quarter 2003 *****

1) LC has added a cross-reference from "$vMaps$vJuvenile literature" to "$vMaps for children". This AUP run includes this change.

2) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control:

(a) The 2004 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs, effective 4 December 2003.

(b) All headings are updated to use two revised $x age subdivisions: "$xAdolescence" is now $xAdolescent" and "$xMiddle Age" is now "$xMiddle Aged".

(c) Two files of auxiliary MeSH authority records are now available for download by AEX and AUP users. These files will be updated as necessary.

MESH04-18X.MRC contains MeSH "subdivision records" which are official NLM records for floating $x subfields. Currently contains 83 records.

MESH04-155.MRC contains MeSH "Publication Type" records with an authorized heading tagged 155. Currently contains 129 records.

You can download these files via FTP using the user name PUBACFILES and the password PUBACFILES (both in uppercase). For instructions on retrieving files via FTP see
WWW.LibraryTech.Com/FTP.html.

***** 3rd Quarter 2003 *****

1) LC has changed all instances of "Australian aborigines" to "Aboriginal Australians." In addition, the adjectival form "Australian aboriginal" has been changed to "Aboriginal Australian." These changes appear in both $a and various $x subfields. Likewise, "Tasmanian aborigines" has been changed to "Aboriginal Tasmanians." This run includes many LCSH heading changes due to these changes.

2) Over the past few months, LC has added the note "SUBJECT USAGE: This heading is not valid for use as a geographical subdivision" to about 4700 name and subject geographical (tagged 651) authority records. Almost all of these are the names of parts of large cities where the name is qualified by the name of larger city in parentheses. E.g. "Hollywood (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Bronx (New York, N.Y.).

Until now, LC (rarely) and LTI have used "$zCalifornia$zHollywood (Los Angeles)" and "$zNew York (State)$zBronx (New York)" for the geographical subdivision form of this type of heading. Now, it appears that the "strictly correct" policy would be to (a) delete such geographical subdivisions or (b) to change them to the form for the larger city. E.g., change "$zCalifornia$zHollywood (Los Angeles)" to "$zCalifornia$zLos Angeles".

For now, however, LTI has decided to retain usage of the "old" forms rather than delete useful existing information from $z forms. I.e., we will still validate "$zCalifornia$zHollywood (Los Angeles)" as a correct $z.

***** 2nd Quarter 2003 *****

1) LC has changed the floating topical subdivision "$xJourneys" to "$xTravel" (used with individual persons and groups of literary authors). This run includes many LCSH heading changes due to this revision.

2) LC has changed the abbreviation of "Newfoundland and Labrador" from "Nfld." to "N.L.". This change affects parenthetical qualifiers in both 151 and 110 fields. E.g., "151 $aCanada Bay (Nfld.)" has been changed to "151 $aCanada Bay (N.L.)". LTI has updated name and subject headings to match LC usage.

3) The authorization and correction of subfield v ($v) in series headings (see "4th Quarter 2001, section 6") and "1st Quarter 2003, section 1") has again been considerably enhanced.

4) Amy Turner at Duke University is operating an e-mail discussion group for AUP and AEX users. For further information, contact her at amy.turner@duke.edu).

***** 1st Quarter 2003 *****

1) The authorization and correction of subfield v ($v) in series headings (see "4th Quarter 2001, section 6") has been considerably enhanced.

(a) LTI software now converts series numbering between arabic, roman numeral, and ordinal forms (both English and foreign) as needed.

(b) The number of $v "patterns" recognized has been greatly increased and the correction of variant patterns to valid patterns has been expanded.

(c) LTI has also found, corrected, and reported to LC a number of errors in the 642 fields of LC authority records.

2) The validation and correction of chapter/verse numbering for Bible headings has been enhanced.

For example, "Bible.$pN.T.$pActs 15:36-41" is now automatically corrected to "Bible.$pN.T.$pActs XV, 36-41" by LTI software.

3) LC has changed "$aYugoslavia" to "$aSerbia and Montenegro" when the headings refers to the country after the 1991/1992 breakup of communist Yugoslavia. LTI has updated name and subject usage as needed.

4) Similarly, the subject geographical sub-division forms for many instances of "$zYugoslavia" have been changed to "$zSerbia and Montenegro", esp. where a $z follows. E.g. "$zYugoslavia$zBelgrade (Serbia)" has been changed to $zSerbia and Montenegro$zBelgrade (Serbia)".

5) The GMD "$hcartographic material" now replaces the obsolete forms "$hmap" and "$hglobe" in controlled heading fields and the 245 field.

6) Two files of auxiliary LCSH authority records are now available for download by AEX and AUP users. These files will be updated as LC distributes new or revised records.

LCSH-18X.MRC contains LCSH "subdivision records" which are official LCSH records for floating $x, $y, $v, and (a few) $z subfields. They contain an authorized heading tagged 180, 181, 182, or 185 and are coded with "d" in byte offset 9 of the 008 field. Currently contains 3243 records.

LCSH-REF.MRC contains LCSH "reference records" which contain additional LCSH heading notes and instructions but do not contain validated LCSH headings. They are coded with "b" or "c" in byte offset 9 of the 008 field. Currently contains 723 records.

You can download these files via FTP using the user name PUBACFILES and the password PUBACFILES (both in uppercase). For instructions on retrieving files via FTP see
WWW.LibraryTech.Com/FTP.html.

***** 4th Quarter 2002 *****

1) LTI has begun doing limited authorization and correction of subfield v ($v) in series headings.

Prior to November 2002, LTI authority processing did not look at or attempt to correct and validate series $v. In a major enhancement to its authorization of series headings, LTI is now doing limited validation and correction of $v content.

LTI will continue to enhance and refine the authorization of $v in the months ahead. Some of the validation and changes currently implemented include:

(a) If the $v contains data that should be in the $a (or other subfield) of the series heading, a correction is made.

(b) Errors in the spacing, punctuation, and capitalization of the $v are corrected.

(c) Wherever possible, the format of the $v is checked against the LC authority record 642 field ("series numbering example") and the $v is changed to match the format of the LC example.

(d) In accord with the "Library of Congress Rule Interpretation" of AACR2 Appendix B.5, we are correcting $v part designations to the correct "prescribed abbreviation" form wherever possible. For example, "$vvolume 3" is changed to "$vv. 3" and "$vvol. 3" is changed to "$vv. 3".

(e) In addition, LTI editors now manually review "unusual" $v data and correct and validate it as well.

This AUP run includes a number of heading changes based on this enhancement. Most of these changes are listed in a new section of the ".LSB" report [see 2) below].

(AUP level 1 users only: Because series $v content previously was not included in the list of headings processed for your library, few $v corrections will be found in your .LSB report. If you wish to take full advantage of the new series $v processing, you must move to Level 2 or set up a new "base file" for future AUP processing. For additional information, please contact Marsha Hunt (
MHunt@LibraryTech.Com)).

2) A new section has been added to the ".LSB" list to further organize series heading changes.

The "Series, $v change only" section includes series headings where (1) the ONLY change is in the final subfield of the heading and (2) the final subfield of both the old heading and the new heading is $v. For example "$v15" changed to "$vv. 15."

3) The ".LSB" list now contains up to 15 subsections and their order has been slightly revised. See the document The AUP LSB & LSA Reports for further information.

4) LC is currently upgrading all LCSH headings for battles to the current form as described in the recent update to section H1285 of the LC "Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings."

5) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control: The 2003 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs.

6) Also for MeSH authority control, all headings are updated to use the new $x age subdivisions and the new $v genre terms as implemented in 2001. See "4th Quarter 2001, section 6" below for details.

***** 3rd Quarter 2002 *****

1) The "Subject, changed sf order only" section includes a number of changes from $z...$x to $x...$z. This reflects the continuing LC implementation of its "preferred" subfield order of $x $z $y $v. The LTI internal float tables and processing code have been updated to reflect LC practice.

2) The enhanced conversion of $x to $v, begun in 4th Quarter 2001 (see below), has been further refined and expanded. This quarter, added attention has been given to validation or correction of triple $v usage. In addition, LC has made a number of $x to $v changes in the LCSH authority records and LTI's $x to $v conversion procedures follow the LC changes.

3) LC has changed "$aHong Kong (China : Special Administrative Region)" back to "$aHong Kong (China)" -- reversing the earlier change (see #2 under 2nd Quarter 2002). LTI's float tables have been adjusted.

4) Similarly, the subject geographical sub-division form for Hong Kong has been changed from "$zChina$zHong Kong (Special Administrative Region)" back to "$zChina$zHong Kong".

5) LTI has enhanced its processing to better detect typographical errors in $v, $x, $y, and $z floats and to suggest corrections to LTI editors. Many additional fixes have been added to the LTI float correction tables and are reflected in the ".LSB" report.

***** 2nd Quarter 2002 *****

1) The enhanced conversion of $x to $v, begun in 4th Quarter 2001 (see below), has been further refined and expanded. LC has been particularly active this quarter in changing $x to $v in the LCSH authority file and LTI's $x to $v conversion procedures follow the LC changes.

2) LC has changed almost all instances of "$aHong Kong (China)" to "$aHong Kong (China : Special Administrative Region)". [The "$aHong Kong (China)" heading is still valid for the city proper but is rarely used.]

3) Similarly, LC has also changed the subject geographical sub-division form for Hong Kong from "$zChina$zHong Kong" to "$zChina$zHong Kong (Special Administrative Region)". The LTI sub-division float table has been updated to include this change.

***** 1st Quarter 2002 *****

1) A new file of deleted LC authority records (with the extension ".LCDEL") has been added. It contains brief records for LC authority records that are no longer in the LC authority files.

Byte offset 5 in the record leader to set to "d" to indicate that the record is a delete record (as per LC practice).

To use this file to automatically remove deleted records from your local authority files, YOUR LOCAL SYSTEM MUST SUPPORT DELETION OF RECORDS MARKED BY "d" IN BYTE OFFSET 5 OF THE LEADER. If you are not certain of this, do not use this file.

2) Based on section H1647 of the LC "Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings," we have implemented removal of "$xHistory" in cases where LC specifies that $xHistory should NOT be used with another $x.

For example, "$xHistory, Local$xHistory" is changed to "$xHistory, Local" and "$xHistory$xIntellectual life" is changed to "$xIntellectual life." The presence of a $y with either or both $x forms is also taken into account.

3) The enhanced conversion of $x to $v, begun in 4th Quarter 2001 (see below), has been further refined and expanded.

In addition, specific cases of $x[form subdivision]$z[geo subdivision] are now corrected to $z[geo subdivision]$v[form subdivision] where the $x$z sequence is invalid and the $z$v sequence is valid. For instance, $a...$xBibliography$z[geo subdivision] is changed to $z[geo subdivision]$vBibliography.

***** 4th Quarter 2001 *****

1) In accord with the "Library of Congress Rule Interpretation" of AACR2 section 22.17, we have converted a number of personal name birth dates to the format "$db. [date]" from "$d[date]- ". E.g., "$d1899- " is changed to "$db. 1899".

This was done when the birth date was known, the death date was not available, and it was fairly certain that the person has died. In cases where the person's death is not established, the "$db. [date]" form is used for birth dates prior to 1900, and the "$d[date]- " form for birth dates in 1900 and after.

These changes are listed in a new "Name, changed birth date form only" subsection at the end of the ".LSB" list.

2) Based on observed LC practice and additional information in LC's LCSH authority records, we have continued to refine and expand our handling of $x to $v and $v to $x changes in subject headings. In particular, the validating and updating of double $v usage (e.g. "$vBibliography$vJuvenile literature") has been enhanced.

3) The LC changes of terminology from "Handicapped" to "Persons with disabilities" (and similar headings) in late 2001 are in this run.

4) In both the ".LSA" and the ".LCB" lists, the summary statistics have been moved to the beginning of the file.

5) For libraries that subscribe to MeSH authority control: The 2002 MeSH authority records were used for this AUP run and are now used for Authority Express runs.

6) Also for MeSH authority control, all headings are updated to use:

a) The new $x age subdivisions: e.g., "$xAdult" for "$xin adulthood", "$xChild" for "$xin infancy & childhood", etc.

b) The new $v genre terms: e.g., "$vDirectory" for "$vdirectories", "$vBibliography" for "$vbibliography" (change in capitalization), etc.

c) A new subsection "NLM MeSH subject changes, CSP change only" at the end of the ".LSB" file lists MeSH changes where the only change is in the capitalization, spacing, or punctuation of the heading.

***** 3rd Quarter 2001 *****

1) LTI has a web-based interface to allow easier retrieval of AUP output files. With a web browser (e.g. Netscape or Internet Explorer), go to the web site WWW.AUTHORITYCONTROL.COM. From the menu on the left side of the main page, click on "User Login" and then "Authority Update Processing" and then follow the instructions on the screen. You can still use FTP to retrieve the files as in the past.

***** 2nd Quarter 2001 *****

1) A new section has been added to the ".LSB" list to further organize subject heading changes.

The "Subject, changed sf order only" section includes subject headings where the ONLY change is the order of the subfields. For several years, LC has been more aggressively implementing its "preferred" subfield order of $x $z $y $v. The LTI internal float tables and processing code have also been gradually upgraded to create this subfield ordering where possible.

***** 1st Quarter 2001 *****

1) This AUP run reflects LC's 1 February 2001 implementation of "substantial changes in the subject headings that are assigned to works in the fields of fine arts and architecture." This is described on LC's web site at: lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/artcat.html.
