At the Anaheim conference of the American Library Association, MARBI approved a proposal to make the 440 field obsolete and use instead the 490/8XX combination.
National-level implementation is projected to take place in the fall. Note, however, that any library using LTI authority control services already has the option not to revert series fields to tag 440, i.e., to retain 490_1/830 fields, following authority control. The option is controlled by the library's profile, which can be revised at any time.
LTI recommends that libraries considering a profile change to eliminate 440 fields also review their other options for series authorization, including authorization of untraced (490 0) series. AEX and AUP users may view their current profiles on LTI's website by logging in to either account and choosing "PROFILE" from the main page.
Note that profiles cannot be changed directly by libraries; requests for profile changes should be sent to Marsha A. Hunt at LTI.
